Overview of the Neurontin Generic

As mentioned in the opening paragraph, Gabapentin (Neurontin generic) is an inexpensive medicine that controls partial seizures in adults who have epilepsy. It also treats certain types of nerve pain.

In term of popularity, this medicine is more popular than the medicine that falls in the same class. Gabapentin is also known as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug. The medicine is used by adults and children above 3 years.

What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a disorder caused in the brain in which there are seizures that happen repeatedly. The symptoms vary depending on the type of seizure experienced by the person. Some seizures involve extreme shaking and others may involve loss of alertness.

There are several treatments for epilepsy that includes medication, surgery, and changes in lifestyle. Some of the common drugs used for treating epilepsy are barbiturates, anti-epileptics, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, benzodiazepines, adrenocorticotropic hormones, and potassium channel openers.

What does the Neurontin tablets and capsules contain?

The active ingredient in Neurontin tablets and capsules is Gabapentin. Gabapentin is white to off-white crystalline solid and is freely soluble in water and both basic and acidic aqueous solution.

What are the dosing options for Neurontin?

The dosage options would be different for different patients. The most commonly used is Neurontin Gabapentin 300mg dosage, you can see here https://www.meds4sure.com/buy-neurontin-gabapentin-online.html, but it would depend on their medical conditions, the type of medications they are on and their lifestyle.

  • For epilepsy:
    • For Adults and children older than 12 years- Initial dose includes 300 mg 3 times per day. The doctor might adjust the dose as needed but it is usually not more than 2400 mg per day (that’s a lot anyway).
    • For children 3 to 11 years of age- The dose is based on the child’s weight and is determined by the doctor. The dose is usually divided into three doses and the starting dose is between 10 and 15 mg per kg of body weight.
    • The children below 3 years of age- The dose and usage direction is determined by the doctor.
  • For postherpetic neuralgia:
    • Adults- The initial dose is 300 mg 3 times a day. If the dose doesn’t suite you, the doctor might adjust it. The maximum dose however does not exceed 1800 mg.
    • Children-The dosage must be reviewed by the doctor.

What if you miss any dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as quickly as possible. If this is the time for next dose, skip the missed and wait for the next dosing schedule. Never take more than the prescribed dose as it may put you in serious trouble.

Storage:

  • The medicine should be stored in a closed container.
  • It should be kept away from heat, moisture, and direct light at room temperature.
  • Do not freeze the medicine.
  • You should always keep up to date medicine and throw away the outdated ones.
  • Seek advice from the healthcare advisor on how to dispose of medicines that are not of any use. Do not keep expired medicines, throw them away as soon as you find out they have crossed the expiration date.

How should you take Neurontin?

  • Take the medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • You should not take the medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
  • You should not stop taking Neurontin, even if you feel fine. If you do so, you might increase the risk of increased seizures.

What does the medicine look like?

Neurontin is available as tablets and capsules:

  • Neurontin 800 Mg tablet – White, elliptical, NT 26 imprinted on it
  • The Neurontin 600 Mg tablet – white, elliptical, NT 16 imprinted on it
  • Neurontin 100 Mg capsule- white, oblong (Neurontin 100 mg, Pd) imprinted on it

What are the side effects of taking Neurontin?

Side effects may include:

  • Increased seizures
  • Severe weakness or tiredness
  • Problems with muscle movements
  • Stomach pain
  • Chest pain
  • Numbness
  • Headaches
  • Swelling of hands and feet
  • Fever, nausea, and vomiting

If you face any worsening or new symptoms like trouble sleeping, behavior changes or mood, panic attacks, anxiety, or if you feel irritated, depressed, restless or have feelings about self-destruction then immediately report to the doctor.

What are the other uses of Gabapentin?

  • Helpful in treating comorbid stress in bipolar subjects.
  • It may be useful in taken infantile nystagmus and pendular nystagmus.
  • Useful in treating hot flashes.
  • Maybe helpful in decreasing pain in multiple sclerosis.
  • It is also used in the cure of alcohol use disorder.
  • Also effective in curing kidney failure and other causes.
